A fixed prosthesis replaces missing teeth. Such fixed prosthetics are divided into dental crowns (if placed on one tooth or on the remaining root of one tooth), dental bridges (if attached to adjacent teeth), and prostheses on implants (if attached to dental implants).
Fixed dental prosthetics include all those elements that are permanently implanted in the jaw and the patient cannot remove them himself. Fixed dental prosthetics include works that are fixed in the mouth and are not removed.
In recent years, the computer-assisted production of fixed works using CAD/CAM technology has become very important.
In addition to traditional metal-ceramic dental crowns, or metal structures coated with ceramics, modern dentistry has developed systems that combine excellent functional characteristics with the best aesthetic qualities, such as metal-free dental crowns and zirconium crowns that have significantly improved optical properties and look like tooth enamel.
Crowns
Crowns are a type of dental replacement that completely covers the remainder of the tooth after cementation, says Imed. Since it covers the entire visible part of the tooth, it becomes its new surface. Crowns, which we classify as fixed dental prosthetics, are made of porcelain, metal, or a combination of these two materials. Crowns (or caps, as they are often called) are made in cases where the natural tooth is significantly damaged (most often due to caries, fractures, etc.), or for aesthetic reasons (unsatisfactory color or shape of the tooth).
- Metal-ceramic crowns have satisfactory aesthetics and in certain cases still represent the only possible solution.
- Zirconium-ceramic crowns are aesthetically perfect crowns. They are intended for those who strive for a natural perfect smile.
Fully ceramic crowns (Empress, Emax) are made of top-notch ceramics and are most often used when it is necessary to install only one crown on a natural tooth or implant. This crown can be made in just one hour using CAD/CAM technology.
The reasons for making crowns can be:
- Protection - a dental crown is made to prevent the remaining dental crown from breaking, damaged by physical trauma or caries.
- Aesthetics - the crown is intended to change the appearance of an aesthetically unsatisfactory tooth.
- Prosthetics - the crown is placed as a support for the dental bridge.
Bridge
The bridge, which we also classify as fixed dental prosthetics, is a replacement consisting of several connected crowns. The bridge represents a choice in cases when one or more teeth are missing, whereby the toothless space is limited on both sides by natural teeth that will be used as bridge supports. The bridge consists of two crowns placed on existing teeth - carriers, and artificial teeth - crowns, which complete the void. Bridge carriers can be natural teeth or implants. The bridge, which we classify as dental prosthetics, in addition to the aesthetic, has a health function, as it prevents the retraction of the gums and the mobility of adjacent teeth. Preparing the teeth to accept the bridge is similar to preparing the teeth for individual crowns.
