A skeletal dental prosthesis belongs to the group of mobile prosthetic replacements used to replace missing teeth, as well as other soft and hard tissues that are lost after a patient extracts teeth. They are most often made for patients who have a small number of teeth left in the jaw, but at the same time, have a certain number of their natural teeth on which the prosthesis can rely. This type of prosthesis is maximally reduced and is characterized by great comfort in wearing because it relies less on the palate and the sublingual region. Compared to a partial plate prosthesis, it is technologically much more perfect.
The skeletal dental prosthesis has a metal skeleton as its basis, which gives it strength. For teeth, it is most often connected by special connecting elements - metal hooks or precise connecting elements, so-called attachments, which hold the prosthesis in place in the mouth, transfer pressure more correctly, and are not visible in the mouth. One part of the clasp (attachment) is located inside the prosthesis, and the other on the tooth, which makes it more stable. Such a prosthesis almost completely physiologically transfers the pressure of chewing because it evenly relies on both teeth and gums. In this way, it contributes to the preservation of the remaining natural teeth and the jawbone. The advantage of this prosthesis is also the reduced possibility of fractures, and as the jawbones are relieved, their resorption is also reduced. Because of all this, the period of adjustment to this type of prosthesis is usually much shorter. The reduced form of the prosthesis reduces the feeling of a foreign body in the mouth, and the sense of taste and the feeling of thermal contents are much better. Oral hygiene maintenance is also facilitated, and speech disturbances are short-term after getting the prosthesis.
A skeletal dental prosthesis can be used in combination with fixed prosthetic works such as crowns and bridges. These prostheses are also biologically acceptable. However, the best and most modern solution in such cases are prostheses that are fixed with implants. In our clinic, we provide all these services and procedures, as well as expert advice that can help you choose the best solution for a healthy and bright smile.
