Cystectomy

Cystectomy is a procedure that removes a cyst. Cysts are pathological cavities lined with tissue and filled with fluid, they can develop in the jaw and in the soft tissue (mouth, cheek...). Artificial bone can be applied to the cavity that remains after its removal, in order to achieve full bone healing.

Symptoms of cyst formation

If you notice a change in tooth color, or have a large untreated cavity for a long time, the appearance of a protrusion (ball) in the area of the external part of the gums or on the palatal side, pain and sudden swelling that can recede, but may return after some time, it's time to visit the dentist. After clinical and radiographic diagnostics, the dentist decides whether a cyst has formed, what size it is, and refers the patient to an oral surgeon to have it surgically removed as soon as possible.

Dental cysts occur as a body's reaction to chronic infection that comes from the top of the infected tooth root into the jaw, most often as a result of caries or trauma caused by an avital tooth (tooth without a nerve).

Symptoms of dental cysts are:

– Change in tooth color
– Large untreated cavity
– Protrusion on the bone (jaw) above the tooth
– Fistula
– Pain, swelling, redness around the tooth

As the cyst grows, constant pressure causes displacement or destruction of surrounding structures. If there are several infected teeth in the mouth, a cyst can form on each of them. The likelihood of cyst formation is greater in people with poor hygiene and neglected teeth.

Some patients are genetically predisposed and are prone to the occurrence of cystic changes in the oral cavity. For smaller cysts, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, quickly removed, and postoperatively the patient feels great. If the cyst has affected the root tip of the teeth, they are removed and the surgeon retrogradely closes the canals, and if the cyst has affected a larger part of the tooth, it is removed together with the cyst. If it is a large and complicated cyst, the patient may be referred to maxillofacial surgery.
