Metal-Ceramic Crowns and Bridges

Metal-ceramic crowns fall into the category of fixed prosthetic replacements consisting of a metal base (cap) and ceramics. They are indicated in cases where the tooth cannot be adequately reconstructed with a filling. Or in situations where one or more teeth need to be replaced, when we talk about a metal-ceramic bridge.

Metal-ceramic crowns are actually "caps" used to remediate situations where the natural tooth is noticeably damaged. Tooth damage can occur due to a fracture, but also in situations where caries have damaged the tooth so much that there is actually no hope for it.

High-Level Aesthetic Correction

Crowns are also used when an aesthetic correction needs to be done due to an unsatisfactory tooth shape. To place crowns, it is necessary to grind natural teeth beforehand. The process of grinding teeth can be unpleasant, but nowadays, in our office, this job is approached very professionally and with anesthesia, so there is no need to worry.

Prosthodontics has advanced, and, believe it or not, very durable metal-ceramic crowns can be built on tooth stumps. To make the shape of the tooth turn out as imagined, an impression must be made.

Making Crowns

As for making crowns, a period of several days is necessary. However, there is no reason to worry here either because you will have temporary crowns in the meantime, so you can function until the teeth are made. A metal, gold, or titanium material is placed on the tooth that has been ground, onto which ceramics is added. Titanium is a very good material, and very often it represents the best option because it is strong and durable, and gums respond best to this material.

With metal-ceramic crowns, there can be a shine of metal in its cervical part, so it is recommended to underline below the gums to hide the metal edge. This will surely lead to gum recession and exposure of the tooth neck over time. When using ceramic crowns, it is not necessary to remove significant tooth substance like for a metal-ceramic crown.

So that it does not turn out that everything is ideal, we will not deny you the information that less than 1% of people are allergic to metal bases, so a crown made from a material that does not contain metal is used.

Pros and Cons of Metal-Ceramic Crowns

When it comes to the positive sides of metal-ceramic crowns, it is certainly their longevity and aesthetic function. Ceramics can change the shape of a tooth, which makes it a significant material. What many are interested in is the price of metal-ceramic crowns. It should be noted that this is an option that is more affordable than metal-free crowns or other tooth augmentation solutions.

The downside could also lie in the fact that teeth need to be ground, and more so than with veneers. Although ceramics are strong and durable, they can, unfortunately, crack if not properly maintained.
