Composite fillings

Caries is one of the leading reasons why patients turn to dentists for filling treatments. They are used in cases where there is no need for a large restoration of dental tissue and are made in our office during one visit. These fillings are also considered aesthetic fillings because they mimic the natural appearance of the tooth structure, and only one visit to DOC Bandić is enough to make and permanently place the filling on the tooth.

In addition to compensating for the loss of hard dental tissues, white fillings can also be used for aesthetic purposes to change the size, color, and shape of teeth. They are particularly useful in closing gaps between teeth (diastemas), repairing fractured teeth, and giving a more uniform and straight appearance to the tooth row.

The advantages of composite fillings are:

  • They match the natural appearance and color of the teeth
  • They adhere well to the existing tooth structure
  • Can be used on all tooth surfaces without affecting aesthetics
  • Can be repaired if damaged
  • Any tooth sensitivity is minimal and short-lived

There are two types of dental fillings, black filling, and white (composite) filling. White fillings or fillings have become very often represented primarily because of their aesthetic appearance and the quality they provide.

White fillings are placed in:

• Decayed teeth
• Worn teeth
• Broken teeth
• In situations of tooth fracture
• When closing the space between teeth

What are white fillings actually?

White fillings are composite resins that do not contain mercury or metals. They chemically bind to the tooth, so their bond is stronger and there are fewer chances that caries will occur at that joint. Aesthetically and functionally, they are considered the most acceptable due to modern aesthetic materials that allow them to adapt to the tooth and match your tooth color. They are completely safe for health because no strong materials that can be harmful to health are used in their production. They are also environmentally acceptable.

What are black fillings actually?

Black fillings are amalgams by their composition, an alloy of mercury with silver, tin, and copper in different ratios. Materials that can be harmful to health are used. The black filling mechanically binds to the tooth, so cracks, marginal cracks between teeth, and the recurrence of caries can occur. When placing a black filling, it is necessary to grind a larger part of the tooth than with a white filling, and the healthy part of the tooth is also ground. Composite black fillings are unsightly and harmful to the environment due to strong materials, especially because of the mercury used in production.

For health and aesthetic reasons, it is recommended to replace a black filling with a white one if the filling is worn out, has cracked edges, or is separated from the tooth. Such a filling is suitable for bacterial sedimentation along its edges and the occurrence of caries, so for that reason, it needs to be replaced with a new one. Modern white fillings are considered completely safe for health and are a quality alternative to amalgam black fillings that have even completely ceased to be used in some countries.
