Seven Ways to Overcome Fear of Visiting the Dentist

For some, going to the dentist is a matter of habit, something completely normal, while for others it is still an experience for which they must prepare well mentally, because the very thought of the dentist and any intervention causes them fear and creates resistance.

If you are among those who are afraid of the dentist and for whom every check-up causes anxiety, and you often avoid going until you really don't need to, then we have a few tips for you on how to get rid of that fear.

  1. Share your fear with your dentist

It's so common to be afraid of the dentist that many dental professionals take steps to alleviate anxiety in their patients. Don't hesitate to let your dentist know about your fear and ask them about the ways their clinic helps patients overcome it. Depending on their response, you will know if they are the right choice for you and if they take your fear seriously. If they don't understand, seek help elsewhere.

  • Bring someone with you to your first visit

Having someone close to you who understands and whom you trust by your side can help you relax and feel more comfortable during the dental procedure.

  • Arrive on time, but not too early

The last thing you want is to arrive much earlier than your scheduled appointment and wait for a long time. During this waiting period, various scenarios may run through your mind, making your fear even greater. If you do arrive a little early, bring a magazine or something to occupy your attention while waiting.

  • Don't hesitate to ask for anesthesia

For some procedures, every dentist will recommend and administer anesthesia, while for others, they might suggest doing without it. If you don't feel ready to bear even the slightest pain and you want to be sedated for any procedure, communicate this clearly to your dentist. Nowadays, it's possible to experience no pain in the mouth during any dental intervention.

  • Ask questions

Don't be afraid to ask your dentist to explain what they are doing during the procedure (if you are interested). A reassuring voice is often enough to help you overcome or calm your fear.

  • Take breaks

Take a pause whenever you need to relax and catch your breath. A sensitive dental team will provide you with the time to unwind whenever you need it.

  • Schedule your next appointment before leaving the clinic

There's a greater chance that you'll return soon if you schedule your next appointment immediately after your current one. If you leave the scheduling for later, you might find it difficult to muster the courage and might delay your next dental visit even longer.

Modern dental clinics are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, and dentists have the ability to perform every procedure painlessly and in the best possible way. A competent dental team to whom you entrust your teeth will always ensure that you feel safe and that your fear diminishes with each subsequent visit.

You should know that visiting the dentist is only for your benefit, and if you keep this fact in mind, it will be easier for you to overcome and free yourself from the fear you have. You know that visiting the dentist is not something harmful; on the contrary, you are taking care of your present and future health!
